Essential First Steps to Secure Your New Home

When you first move into your new home, one of the things you want to do is make sure you’re safe. You need to secure your new home so that you can feel safe there and you don’t have to worry about intruders.

There are plenty of things you might choose to do to improve security when you move in. But you also need to prioritize each of the things you want to do.

You probably can’t do it all at once, so it makes sense to think about what you should do first. So what should you do when you’re getting settled into your new home?

Check the Alarm

Does your new home have an existing alarm? You might have been given all of the information about it when you moved in, which will certainly help you to make the most of it.

On the other hand, perhaps you have a fake alarm that doesn’t actually do anything. Or there might not be an alarm at all.

Making sure you have a functioning alarm system and that you know how to operate it should be one of the first things you do in your new home. You don’t want to activate it accidentally or have it fail when you need it most.

Replace the Locks

Not everyone replaces the locks when they move into a new home. They might trust that all the keys from the previous tenants or owners have been returned.

But a lot of people choose to hire a locksmith to switch their locks out for them and give them peace of mind. New locks will provide extra security for your home.

Even if you’re a tenant, you can usually replace the locks as long as you put the original ones back when you move out.

Install Security Lighting and Cameras

Better visibility can be one of the best deterrents for crime around your home. When there isn’t anywhere for criminals to hide, they’re less likely to attempt anything. Two of the ways you can improve visibility are by installing security lighting outside and putting up cameras.

Security lights can use motion sensors to come on when movement is detected. Or they could remain on at all times during the night. Cameras can not only capture anything suspicious but if you get smart cameras, they could also alert you of movement. This way you can see what’s happening.

Secure Outbuildings

One thing that some people might neglect is the security of outbuildings. They can be vulnerable places that might allow people to hide or steal from you if you don’t secure them properly.

Outbuildings might include sheds, barns, stores, greenhouses, and other buildings not directly connected to your home. By making sure they are secure, you will help to protect your home overall. And you can make sure you can keep everything safe.

Most of these buildings will probably need a strong lock and perhaps an alarm to prevent break-ins. When you move into your new home, take the right steps to secure it as soon as you can.
