Summer is here, there’s no doubt about that. As the hot weather arrives, our homes have become increasingly warm. While it’s all well and good enjoying the heat in the warmer summer months, sometimes it can get too much. When you have a young family or grandchildren that come to visit a lot, naturally you want to ensure that you are able to be keeping your family cool and comfortable.
While the sunny weather is all very well, when the mercury hits the high degrees, it can make life a little uncomfortable. For younger children and babies, it can even be dangerous This is why knowing how to keep everyone cool is so vital. Bearing that in mind, below are some handy hacks for keeping your family cool this summer, regardless of how hot it gets outside.
Keeping Your Family Cool As Temperatures Soar
Crank up the air conditioning
If your home has air conditioning, which hopefully it has, then you might want to consider cranking it up to compete with the warmer weather. To reduce the amount of energy being used, set your air conditioning to come on at the warmest times of the day. This is usually from 12 noon to 6 pm and then sporadically through the evening and into the night. Or, you could set your air conditioner to come on when your home reaches a certain temperature, and go off when it’s cooled down by a set amount.
Does your HVAC unit not work as well as it once did? Or, does it lack efficiency? If this is the case, then it might be worthwhile calling out a professional to take a look at it. It could simply be that it needs fixing or that there’s a maintenance issue. Or it could be that the time has come to replace it. If this is the case, make sure to shop around to ensure that you get the best price. A good running AC unit is a great way of keeping your family cool all summer.
Make water fun
In the hot weather, drinking larger amounts of water than normal is crucial to ensure that you remain hydrated. However, it’s not always easy getting little ones to drink extra water. A great hack for ensuring that your little ones get plenty to drink is to make popsicles for them. These can be 90% water and 10% pure fruit juice. There are lots of fun recipes online that you could use. You could even make popsicles with the kids as a fun, summer activity.
It can be difficult getting kids to drink enough water. The key is to make water fun. For instance, infusing fruit into water can be one way to get your little ones to drink more water. Blending fruit into the water as smoothies is another way that you can make water more enjoyable. Homemade sorbet can be another great way to make getting your kids to drink more water easier. The more creative you can be, the better.
Put up a paddling pool
If your home has a pool or there’s a local pool nearby, this won’t be necessary This is because your family can use the pool to cool off. However, if you don’t have a pool, then you should consider investing in a paddling pool for the garden instead. Your little ones can play in, to their heart’s content. If you opt for a large enough sized pool, it could also allow the adults to cool off too. There are some great inflatable pools available that are a fantastic size and are suitable for adults and children alike.
Stay in the shade
Try to avoid going out at the hottest time of the day. However, if you have no choice but to head out, do your best to stay in the shade. Pop a sun hat on the kids and ensure that they are dressed in clothing that will help them to stay cool. Cotton is best for this. The more you can stay in the shade, the better.
You can also place a large shade umbrella in the yard to sit under. You can always move it or take it down if you don’t need it. This is a great way of keeping your family cool in the summer.
Keep the windows open and the curtains closed
Want to keep your home cool for bedtime? Then it’s worthwhile making sure that you keep the upstairs windows open and the curtains closed. This will allow the cool air to come in but without letting the heat in. Of course, you can close the windows when the air conditioning is on. This is just a hack for when you don’t want to leave the air conditioner running all day long.
The summer weather is fantastic, however, it’s not good for your grandchildren’s health, or yours for that matter, to get too hot. That’s why it’s important to know how to keep your whole family cool, even on the hottest of days.
