Everyone has their own ideas for how a home should look and feel. From my point of view, I feel like a living room should always be nice and cozy. There’s nothing better than walking into your living room after a long day, dumping yourself down in some comfy furniture, and just enjoying the warmth and comfort of your home.
I see loads of people are caught up with modern home decor these days. While it may make your living room look nice and flashy, I feel like modern home decor loses some of the key comfort elements. As such, I much prefer a more traditional, cozy, approach. So, let me bestow upon you some of my home decor wisdom in this guide. Everything you could possibly need for a cozy living room is listed down below.
Everything You Need For A Cozy Living Room
A Roaring Fire
I’ll begin this list with something I deem absolutely essential if you want to achieve a truly cozy lovely living room; a roaring fire. A lot of traditional homes or houses on farms are built with fireplaces in the living room. This makes your life easier as you just have to get the fire up and running! Of course, you can give your fireplace a makeover if it’s looking a little old and busted up, but this might not be the case for you. If you haven’t got a fireplace, then you need to install one right away.
The beauty of a fire is that it gives you that natural heat from the flames. This warms you up and just makes the whole room feel nice and toasty. There’s nothing better than sitting in front of your fire with a nice cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night. It’s amazing. You will feel like you’ve achieved peak comfort levels. Plus, you also get a lovely dim flickering light, which I find to be excellent at creating the ideal cozy atmosphere. Especially when combined with candles around your living room too.
A Big Bean Bag or Armchair
When you think about living room furniture, your mind goes towards sofas. A sofa is pretty much the staple piece of furniture in everyone’s living room. Don’t worry, we’ll talk about them soon, but right now I want to focus on solo pieces of furniture. What does this mean? Well, I may have just made that term up on the spot, but I’m talking about things that are designed for one person to use; like an armchair or a big bean bag.
Why are these essential for a cozy living room? Because they’re very snug and give you a chance to just get lost in their comfort. Imagine falling into a bean bag and letting it envelop you as you read a book. Or, picture sinking into a nice armchair and just feeling relaxed without your children or partner taking up space next to you. Sometimes, you just want to be on your own, feeling comfortable.
Now, armchairs are the more expensive option, but you can match them to your sofa, creating a more synergistic design in your living room. Bean bags are fairly cheap compared to them, particularly when you look at their sale price. You can still get ones that fit your overall home decor design, and you could also have enough money for more than one, so you don’t have everyone fighting over one bean bag!
A Nice Plush Sofa
Right, onto the sofa! No living room is complete without a sofa making up the focal point of it. When you’re aiming to create a cozy living space, there’s only one real option; a plush sofa. Don’t waste your time with leather, there’s really no comparison between plush sofas and leather ones regarding comfort and coziness. Yes, leather looks smart and you can dress it up with blankets and throws, but a big plush sofa is just softer and cozier.
Naturally, you should try out different sofas in shops before settling on your dream one. Get one that feels comfortable, and isn’t too firm or soft. You want that perfect balance, a sofa that can hold your weight without feeling like it digs into your bones. Then, think about the size of it. If you have a big family, then a corner sofa could be a splendid idea. It provides you with a lot of sofa, but in a format that’s easy to fit in your living room without taking up too much space. You don’t want to be too cramped on the sofa, but you also don’t want it to be too spacious.
Yes, I know I said sometimes you want to sit on your own. However, sometimes you also want to snuggle up as a family, particularly during the winter months! Essentially, you’re looking for a Goldilocks sofa; one that’s not too firm/soft, and not too big/small – it has to be just right!
Thick Carpet & Curtains
Some nice Venetian blinds and laminate flooring are a combination you see in modern living rooms. It’s stylish, but it doesn’t scream cozy at all. Instead, go down the traditional route with carpet and curtains!
You can still find both carpet and curtains that are stylish, so don’t assume you have to settle for some old-fashioned looking things. There’s just something about both options that are very comforting. It’s the feel of the soft carpet under your feet, the way the curtains cut off the outside and keep your living room nice and closed in; it’s just lovely. Not only that, but both things are great will be keeping heat inside your living room too. Combine this with your roaring fire, and you create a lovely warm winter haven in your cozy living room!
As you can probably tell, I love the idea of cozy home decor. The living room is an ideal starting point for anyone that’s thinking about turning their home into a more traditional and homely space. Who needs modern interior design when you have a cozy living room that just makes you fall in love with your home.
