Choosing the Right Mattress For A Good Night’s Sleep

Choosing the right mattress for your bed is very important for a good night’s sleep. However, figuring out which mattress is best can be exhausting.

Foam or springs, the level of firmness and of course, price, all play a part in your decision. So how do you know which mattress you should choose?

This post will guide you on the considerations to keep in mind when choosing your next mattress.

Where to Purchase Your Mattress

Shopping for a new mattress can be done in-store or online. While shopping in-store means you can actually “try out” the mattress briefly, online sales can be an option as well.

Just be sure regardless of where you decide to choose your next mattress from, that you do some research first. Look at different mattress reviews and see what others are saying.

General Considerations

Your body type, the position in which you normally sleep, and your overall personal preferences will all need to be kept in mind before you shop. Cost, durability and quality will also be important to consider.

Keep in mind that not all mattresses are the same and there is no one-for-everyone mattress. Sleep issues may be something to consider also.

Common Mattress Types

There are 4 main types of mattresses we will include today. Each has its pros and cons. The decision of which type of mattress to choose will depend on what is best for your comfort.

Memory Foam

This is the most popular type of mattress currently. One that lays on a memory foam mattress feels as though the mattress almost cradles them.

This type of mattress is best for people who sleep on their sides or those that have spine issues. They are great for couples because you won’t feel much of the movement of your partner while sleeping.

Innerspring Mattresses

These are made with steel coils. They have more of a bounce than the memory foam mattresses. They are great for people who sleep on their stomachs or their backs.

Better quality mattresses of these types should have a coil gauge (thickness of coils) of 12 to 15, the lower number being more firm. They should also have a coil count. Around 400 is about average for a typical queen mattress.

Latex

These are similar to the memory foam mattresses. However they are made from the rubber tree, which makes them more organic, and higher priced.

These mattresses may be more “bouncy” instead of that “wrap around” feeling that is common with memory foam.

Adjustable Mattresses

For the couple that enjoys completely different sleeping styles, this mattress should be considered. These mattresses have air chambers within them that allow you to control the firmness.

These mattresses can be extremely expensive, and they are not as common as the more traditional mattresses on the market.

Other Considerations

Besides the firmness level of the mattress you choose, you may want to consider some other areas of getting a good night’s sleep. These may include:

  • Hot Flashes and “hot” sleepers may want to consider a cooling mattress. From cool-to-the-touch mattresses to breathable construction, there is a solution for mostly everyone.
  • Suffering with back pain may lead you to choose a medium firm mattress and a bit of foam for comfort.
  • If organic material is required, you may wish to check that the mattress is made of natural materials and certified organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS).
